Software Developer Intern

March - August 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

The intern program is very good, with each intern given a discrete project that doesn't take too much training but is still meaningful to the company and a learning experience for the intern. The people were friendly, helpful, and good-natured over all. The company leadership is wise and has a high value for their employees; the CEOs knew my name (even though there are 200 employees total) and greeted me. Also they have a very nice office with a 14th floor balcony with wildflowers and they provide unlimited ice cream sandwiches.

What I wish was different

In terms of work, the main language used by GSG is Perl, which is an old language and not something to advance one's career. As far as company culture, social events generally involved a lot of drinking. I never witnessed anybody drunk (I didn't hang around at company parties) but heard many stories after the fact.

Advice

Get to know the people, and work on the balcony!

Business Analyst Intern

May - August 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

Overall it was a great learning experience. Everyone I worked with was extremely smart, competent, and kind. I attended a conference in Florida where I interacted with clients -- this was probably the highlight of my summer.

What I wish was different

I would have liked more exposure to the work of full-time Business Analysts earlier on in the internship. However, I was able to gain this exposure by just asking my mentor.

Advice

Approach everything with enthusiasm and seek to take on additional tasks. Spend a lot of time talking to people, both taking advice and trying to understand different professional roles.

What I liked

A Business Analyst intern gets to wear a lot of hats at Grant Street, and there are many opportunities to use your creativity and critical thinking skills. The company culture is something very special, GSG is truly like a family.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had broadened the scope of work

Advice

Get to know everyone in the office, ask lots of questions, and seek out work that challenges you.
