What I liked

It has been great to learn more about the ins and outs of reporting in community journalism in a real-world environment!

What I wish was different

There isn't always a lot of direct guidance, requiring me to learn on the go all the time without any advice. However, it's far from the only time I've ever done that, so it's not such a big deal.

Advice

Make the first move. It's unusual for people to reach out to you with opportunities, and in the journalism industry, positions are competitive. Show off your confidence and skill by being the first one to reach out and ask about a position, even if there isn't one posted. Oftentimes, you can show your potential employer just how serious and dedicated you are about this experience. The worst case scenario would be getting turned down, but if you had nothing to begin with, you had nothing to lose. Go for it!
