Great Books Summer Program

Program Assistant

July 2018 • Amherst, MA

What I liked

The program did a great job of creating a supportive community both for the campers we supervised and among the staff. Although it was a lot of work, all of the work we did with campers from electives to discussions were extremely meaningful. These experiences helped me boost my self-confidence as I saw that I was capable of doing this work and that this work seemed to resonate well with the campers.

What I wish was different

Advice

This was one of the most rewarding summers I have had, I have grown so much emotionally and have learned so much about myself through this experience. Working with teenagers is emotionally and physically draining but it is really great to see them grow, to see them come out of their shells, and to challenge themselves.

What I liked

Great Books is amazing. While it was a lot of work, the rewards were innumerable. I love that I got to spend a lot of time with the campers both in a fun, laid-back setting and in an challenging, academic setting.

What I wish was different

The work load is not easy! While I was able to handle it, it was definitely rough and not for just anyone. If you have a lot of passion for the Great Books mission, then it's not so bad.

Advice

Flexibility, stamina, and a positive attitude are all absolute musts!

What I liked

Loved the program, loved teaching, working with kids, living at the university.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been a little longer!

Advice

Definitely do it if you can, just know that a longer internship or job is likely a better use of the summer. That said, if you can schedule your internship around it, working as a Program Assistant is remarkably satisfying and a wondering break in the summer.

What I liked

Excellent community, great learning and teaching experience. It was an incredibly fulfilling experience that I really enjoyed.

What I wish was different

Orientation could have been improved a bit, as well as support for PAs.

Advice

You sort of learn as you go. The weeks become easier as you get more experience.
