Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co.

Site Engineer

August 2019 - July 2022 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I was able to travel to different cities such as Boston, MA, Quonset, RI, Baltimore, MD, Jacksonville, FL, and so much more. I received in the field experience on dredging, surveying, contracting and other marine construction work. The company takes care of you while you travel. GLDD also gives you training on multiple skills that you will apply on projects.

What I wish was different

Sometimes you work long hours up to 12+ per day and you don't get to choose what projects you want to be on.

Advice

Expect to learn something new on each project. You need to adapt and be a team member. Don't be afraid to ask questions and be transparent about what you don't know how to do.

AutoCAD Intern

June - August 2019 • Oak Brook, IL

What I liked

It was a very friendly environment that was very welcoming when i started. They encouraged curiosity and didn't scold you for asking question. Being able to learn about the AutoDesk programs they used was a great experience and my co-workers were extremely helpful.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more of a steady flow of work. There would be days where I didn't have any work to do at all, and while having a free day is nice, it can get boring when it happens over multiple days.

Advice

This internship is what you make of it. You have to get out there and talk to people and ask questions. The more connections you make during the internship, the better is becomes.
