I liked my coworkers and working in a fast paced environment

we were really understaffed so I ended up taking a lot of shifts and hours I didnt really want and carried a lot of responsibility outside of my job title

Advice

if youre going to work with customers, make sure management values you over them or they will let customers treat you badly. you want them to be ready to defend you.

What I liked

I liked getting to talk to a lot of different people and it was a very fast paced environment which made the time go by quickly.

What I wish was different

I wish I hadn't worked so much.

Advice

Get out of your comfort zone. I worked at this same restaurant as a hostess for 2-3 years before becoming a server, because I thought it would be hard and that I wouldn't be good at it, but I really loved it and enjoyed myself more, all while making more money!

Busser

What I liked

I was able to stay occupied most of the times on weekends, and the tips were quite generous for a busser position.

What I wish was different

More consideration and selflessness of other employees. Whenever I needed to request them to get something done, whether it was taking a table's order, seeing the manager, or retrieving my mandatory tip before checkout, I was always expendable. Being in a low position, you're always an annoyance and in the way of a server or higher. Whenever they needed me to do something, I of course, always had to get it done immediately. Very frustrating group of co-workers and too much pressure is put on the bussers.

Advice

It's an unusual restaurant, in that... the cooks are expected to dishwash, and there is no dishwasher hired. So what ends up happening? The bussers are expected to not only bus the tables, clean the floors, but always do the dishes a lot. So my advice is, stay at an easy pace, it's one of those businesses where you have to move at your pace and keep it that way. The harder you work, the more you get worked if you allow it. So put your foot down, and don't be afraid to walk out, because they can't afford to lose a busser. The one advantage you have is they can't afford to lose you as a busser, that's how I knew I had the power to put my foot down, it's the only way to survive.

What I liked

I thoroughly enjoyed learning about restaurant service as well as learning more about customer service.

What I wish was different

Sometimes the constant time crunch and trying to make everyone happy all at once could be challenging. However, I learned how to prioritize various tasks and make decisions on the fly.

Advice

I feel like everyone should experience what it's like to work a low income job, like in the restaurant business, in order to understand and appreciate what work goes into doing these types of jobs.
