GTM ARCHITECTS

Project Coordinator

May 2018 - August 2019 • Bethesda, MD

What I liked

The firm has four studio typologies (commercial, commercial interiors, multi-family, and private homes), however there is a sufficient amount of work to give interns the ability to cross over into all studios while also allowing interns to be apart of different phases of design. This was big for me because this happened to be my first architecture specific job straight out of college and I had the opportunity to see practically every aspect and facet of design and business within an architecture firm first hand in my short time at the firm. They helped me gain ample experience for my AXP hours and for my career/longevity in the architecture field. The only reason I left was to continue my education, but the firm is a place I would love to grow and continue my career. Another great point, is the ability for growth not just in experience, but in the company as well. Your efforts here don't go unnoticed and everyone is ready and willing to help.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more Revit based projects for me to work on while I was at the firm. Luckily, they are already transitioning to a more Revit based system in the office so other than that, I couldn't complain.

Advice

Although I understand not every firm is as close knit as GTM, at any firm, if there are firm events, lunch n' learns, or whatever else is offered by the firm I'd strongly recommend going and enjoying yourself. Work is about getting the job done, but if a firm like GTM is willing to treat their employees you should enjoy the fruits of your labor. From sporting events, to BBQs, to lunch n' learns, and everything in between, GTM really showed me they care about their employees as if you are family and that is a priceless token of appreciation you may not find everywhere. Along with that, ask all the questions you have no matter how small. The only mistake you can make is not asking questions, because everyone is willing to help you and that is so important especially as a new comer.
