Emerson Grant Research Scholar

May - August 2020 • Clinton, NY

What I liked

Being able to conduct your own independent research as an undergraduate is an amazing opportunity that many schools cannot provide. This is a wonderful chance for students who are interested in pursuing a career in academia, or who just have an interest that no Hamilton courses thoroughly cover, to spend a summer working closely with a faculty member to develop research skills and learn about their area of interest. Mine was able to link my passions for philosophy and early modern history!

What I wish was different

Due to Covid restrictions, I was unable to conduct my research on campus as I had anticipated. Doing research from home was possible, but it would have been nice to have easier access to the Burke Library! Hopefully, this won't be an issue this coming summer.

Advice

Make sure you're in frequent contact with your faculty advisor! It's best if you ask someone you know well and who is an expert on your topic because they will be an important resource for your research.

Independent Researcher

June - August 2020 • Melbourne, FL

What I liked

I researched the experiences of women in STEM at Hamilton college with funding from the Kirkland Endowment. I liked getting to explore a topic of my choosing that relates to my own experiences as a women in STEM. I also had a lot of freedom to take my project in any directions of my choosing.

What I wish was different

I wish I had had a little more time to explore my data.

Advice

If you are doing research with humans (aka surveys, interviews etc) prepare your IRB materials early, because it takes at least two weeks to hear back about approval.
