Harrison Center

Creative Placemaking Intern

June - August 2019 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

The Harrison Center provided many opportunities to grow as an artist and gave insight in how collaboration between nonprofit agencies work with the local community and government. In addition to connecting me to many great people, I learned how to better work in collaboration with others on projects and share those creations. The environment was encouraging even, to interns, and pushed us to be bold in asking questions, trying new things and pursuing people around us.

What I wish was different

Aspects that could be improved are organization of the intern's projects as well. Providing more structured times for specific duties would help improve work flow and productivity.

Advice

If you enter into this internship, you need to be prepared to have initiative in creating something unique and meaningful. Interns are given a fair amount of freedom in narrowing down what exactly they plan to create for the summer, so it is important that interns be capable of planning, researching and creating on their own. Also, bring a bike! Indy is amazing city that is super bike friendly and easy to explore.

What I liked

I loved getting paid to make block prints over the summer. The Harrison Center actively cares about community and is spearheaded by a lot of powerful and inspiring ladies. Overall an incredible experience and one of the best summers I've had in a long time.

Advice

Being self-motivated played a significant part in this internship. The fantastic internship coordinator explained to me that you get out of it what you put into it, so that was a helpful mindset to be in throughout the summer.

Creative Placemaking

June - August 2017 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

The best part of the job is how much the Harrison Center invests in you. The job requires creativity, flexibility, and responsibility, but they work hard to give you the tools you need to see your projects through and to improve and understand yourself in the process.

What I wish was different

The expectations of interns could have been a little clearer, but I believe this is left intentionally vague partially to keep the interns from limiting themselves.

Advice

The more you put in, the more you'll get out. Sometimes you will feel stuck or unsure what to do next. Just do something to move forward, even if you're not sure why you're doing it.
