What I liked

I worked with the Hathaway Brown Theatre Institute program housed within the school. The atmosphere was very fun, as I was working primarily with the youngest age group. I had a lot of freedom directing the 10-12 year old group in some more specific acting scenes, which was great to change the day-to-day routine up a bit.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more effective communication throughout the adults leading the camp. There was some, but there were large personal problems with a couple of the returning staff members that lead to an unease at times.

Advice

My position is really only for theatre artists. Actively engage with and support the kids you'll be working with, and you'll have a great time! Definitely get enough sleep, the day can feel really long if you're tired.

Teaching Internship

What I liked

I loved the chance to be able to take charge in the classroom and give back to the community that had given so much to me. I was able to learn so much about my students and myself and I feel more confident in my ability to work with children. It was also a great opportunity to try something outside of my comfort zone and pick up new skills.

What I wish was different

I wish the programme could be longer! But I understand that time constraints and how the programme is set up so I completely understand. There's nothing that I would do differently though because everything was .a teachable moment.

Advice

Go in open minded! I went in knowing that I didn't want to be a full time educator, however, by time I left the programme, I had a bit of a change of heart. I would advise everyone not to be nervous, and to just try your best. The kids love the teachers and everyone benefits in the end. Don't come in thinking you know how it's going to go because I promise things happen along the way1
