Hawaiian Airlines

Industrial Engineering Analyst

May - August 2019 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

I enjoyed my time at Hawaiian Airlines because I had the opportunity to teach myself new programming languages in order to complete analysis, but there were also days that I got to spend at the airport on the flight line. It gave a good combination of hands on work as well as analysis. I also enjoyed the fact that I contributed actual work to the company and that the files and programs I created are still being used.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had worked for a department that consistently used code, so I would have a supervisor that could assist me when I ran into problems.

Advice

In order to be successful in internships, it is important to be open minded to using and learning new techniques. The things we learn in school are extremely important, but industry work has a lot of techniques and tricks that are very beneficial. Different companies use different types of software and hardware, so the techniques taught in an academic setting aren't necessarily the best ways to do things. Sometimes they are, and sometimes they aren't, so being open minded is essential to completing internships successfully.

Operations Initiatives Intern

June - August 2019 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

It was fun to get to witness all the moving parts of a fairly large company. Attending meetings with representatives of various departments, working on organizing project deadlines, contacting and communicating with people internationally are a few examples of my exciting time at Hawaiian Air.

What I wish was different

I wish I were given a more tasks or a project to do. When I first joined the team, they were already in the middle to the end of a huge project, which made it a little challenging for me to find a place to make a significant contribution.

Advice

Talk to as many people as possible during your internship, or really during any experience. You never know who you are going to meet and what opportunities may arise from a simple conversation.
