What I liked

The pay was decent, and the people were good enough to work with for the most part

What I wish was different

The hours - I had to work almost 60 hours every week, which was good pay but very tiring

Advice

I would recommend working a factory job at least once in your life, to get the feel for those who work in that type of industry, and to develop a good work ethic.

Legal Intern

May - August 2019 • Holland, MI

What I liked

The internship program at Haworth pushed me to connect with employees outside of my field in order to gain a better understanding of life at the company. It allowed me to see how connected the legal team is within a business of that size and gave me resources for when I was completing independent projects.

Supply Chain Intern

May 2019 • Holland, MI

What I liked

Haworth had a very comprehensive intern program that allowed to me discover many facets of the business while expanding my network. I liked the opportunity that it provided to speak with people in all parts of the business that I normally would not. I also liked the project that I was given. I was able to undertake a project with little guideline and then make it my own and figure out how to solve the problem.

What I wish was different

Advice

Take advantage of all of the chances you have to network and talk with people at your workplace. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions. Employers are there to help you and help you grow, so don't be afraid to ask questions and learn as much as you can.

Advice

Get a good pair of boots & inserts for your shoes. I was constantly on my feet and after a while they would hurt.

June - August 2018 • Holland, MI

What I liked

The people I worked with were quirky and interesting and I became friends with them quickly.

What I wish was different

The conditions for work were alright, but I wish the higher up employees were a bit more considerate of the needs and wishes of the members working in the factory. Organization of the work place and tasks could have also been improved.

Advice

I would definitely give manufacturing work a try if only to be able to see how a factory environment works or how it's run. I would be prepared for different kinds of physical labor, and to be flexible and open to what the company may ask you to do in your position.

Sustainability Intern

May - August 2018 • Holland, MI

What I liked

Haworth's internship program has a strong emphasis on personal development. They invest heavily in their interns and provide you with opportunities to interact with various aspects of the company. Most interns were given projects that had real impacts on the business and were recognized for their contributions to the company.

What I wish was different

The internship is very scheduled in order to accommodate all of the events and training that are a part of the program. subsequently, the start and end dates are pretty firm (although they will make exceptions). Additionally, you'll have to be intentional about scheduling your regular work around some of the trainings - it can be difficult but it's definitely worth it and your coworkers will work with you to make sure everything fits.

Advice

Make as many connections as possible. Haworth is very intentional about welcoming and educating their interns and treating them like regular members. Get to know people outside of your immediate department and connect with other interns. It will make the experience much more rewarding and enjoyable. Plus, there are plenty of spaces and opportunities to get out and meet with others.
