Engineering Intern

What I liked

Summer 2020 marked my second year interning with Helmerich & Payne. I worked remotely out of the Tulsa office in the Continuous Improvement Solutions group. While my experience was much different from working directly on the rig in Summer 2019, I enjoyed collaborating with other interns and H&P engineers to gather data and create reports in Power BI.

What I wish was different

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, I worked from home for my internship. Unfortunately, this meant that I would be unable to enjoy the full experience of an H&P office intern. Although I missed out on a "normal" internship at the corporate office, I am beyond grateful to H&P for allowing me to work remotely.

Advice

No matter what type of environment you are in, you can always learn something new! When I found out that my internship with H&P would be entirely remote, initially I was worried that I would not be able to keep up with projects and have difficulty collaborating with fellow interns. It felt amazing to be proven wrong! Although working remotely did present some challenges, I was able to complete several projects before the conclusion of my internship in July. I also learned a lot from my mentors as well as engineers from other departments. Whether I was working from home or on the rig, H&P is a wonderful company to work for!

Engineering Field Intern

What I liked

My internship with Helmerich & Payne was one of the best learning experiences of my life. During the summer of 2019, I worked as a roughneck on a FlexRig5. By working directly on the rig itself, I was immersed into the industry and was able to gain a much more thorough understanding of the drilling process and daily operations in the field. Helmerich & Payne is a wonderful company to intern with/work for, with a great company culture and and high standards for the overall safety and well-being of their employees.

What I wish was different

Advice

I will be direct and to the point: working in the oilfield is a tough and dirty job. Expect to get your hands dirty, but keep in mind that the more you put in to your internship, the more you will get out of it. During my experience, I gained so much respect for the hardworking, intelligent men and women who work in this industry. Although we, as students, may be pursuing a degree in engineering, these are the people who have worked in the field and who have years of experience. Be respectful of this, and remember that everyone has something to teach you, all you have to do is listen.

Apply for H&P. Also in interviews ask about projects engineering interns get for the summer

What I liked

My favorite part about the internship program was having the opportunity the learn useful knowledge and be submerged in something I am so passionate about. I believe I am entering the new school year with a fresh perspective and advantageous knowledge that will help me exponentially in pursuing my degree. I felt very fulfilled in completing the work I did and being surrounded by new learning opportunities every day.

What I wish was different

If I had to choose one thing I would change about the internship experience, it would be the opportunity to choose where I was located.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is to be prepared for the long hours and hard work required to work efficiently so that you may better contribute to the program.

Advice

Fully understand what your duty is before accepting an internship. Ask questions, such as: Who/what department will I be working with? What will I be doing for the department? Is there opportunity to learn more about different departments within the company? What will my duties be? Ask these questions during the interview process.
