Sales Planning Intern

June - September 2018 • Irvine, CA

What I liked

Houzz is a typical "Palo Alto-like" start-up office. The amenities of working here are incredible! There is a fully stocked kitchen, a slide to connect the two floors, Kombucha, Cold Brew, and Matcha on tap, Wellness Wednesdays where you get to wear athletic clothes to work, free workout classes, catered breakfast on Mondays and catered lunch on Fridays, monthly birthday celebrations and baby showers, and so much more. All these things are great, but ultimately they make the company culture so special and employees happy, awake, and positive people who look forward to working together! I loved the autonomy I got with this internship, being able to create my own hours before and then work on my projects as I needed.

What I wish was different

Occasionally, as a Sales Planning Intern, the work can get repetitive and sometimes when you finish your assignments you are left with nothing to do. I wish there were a bit more interactive/ creative assignments. Be ready for tons and tons of spreadsheets and formulas!

Advice

First, do yourself the favor of having excel experience, it will help you a ton for this internship! Second, for the end of internship project, you have to present to your boss, some people in your department, and your HR rep. It is important to do something that shows you've been productive, thinking outside the box , and trying to make this HOUZZ better! Finally, I highly recommend shadowing as many departments as you can to see what you like about each one and connect with more staff. The more connections you make the more you will feel welcomed and like you belong in the office!
