Accountant Intern

June - September 2018 • Paris, France

What I liked

Overall, as my first formal paid internship, working as an accountant as ICBC Paris has not only allowed me to learn the structure and financial details of a company, but has given a chance to incorporate what I have learned from classroom into practice. The daily approachment work taught me that accountants have to be careful because all numbers are important; the accounts would not be balanced with a mistake of 0.01. This has also showed me how accounting is extremely essential when international commercial banks process financial transactions. Additionally, the reimbursement work at the Accounting Department has reflected what I have learned from Introductory Accounting class even more. When I recorded the reimbursement of the company, I truly see the relations of Debit and Credit. I can relate them to the overall balance of the company. Without these accounting tools and rules, the financial system at a corporate will be unorganized and the corporate will be hard to function and to move forward. These tools truly help a corporate learn itself and make properly and timely adjustments. From the work that I do at ICBC Paris Accounting department, I haved truly realized the power of accounting in a corporate

What I wish was different

Even though my experience at ICBC Paris was meaningful and knowledgeable, there are many aspects that I think the Accounting Department can work on to improve the efficiency of the staff and the company. First of all, the accountants have been manually copying the details of ICBC accounts in other banks to the rapprochement form. This is very time-consuming and inconvenient. Admittedly, it is possible that the relying on machines would create mistakes. For example, if there are two $20 entries on debit side but one $20 entry on credit side, the machine might cancel out the wrong one. Therefore, using employees manually to do the approachment is understandable. However, I believe that one day computer engineers will design some smart machines that can distinguish the two $20 on debit side and decide which one to cancel out with the $20 on credit side through the reference of these two entries. Additionally, the reimbursement work at ICBC Paris can also be improved on efficiency, even though they have already have a very easy system that simplifies the entry into easy numbers and accounts. The process can be even more simplified by using e-forms. Instead of inputting all the reimbursement details manually by the accountants, the ICBC employees can simply put their own reimbursement request in a computer system, and the accountant can just check, categorize and approve their request. In this way, the accounting department will be able save a lot of time on inputting the request by hands. The system will even be more organized and helpful for ICBC in the world.
