Lead Instructor

May - August 2019 • Cambridge, MA

What I liked

I got to work with kids and teach about the intersectionality of technology and art.

What I wish was different

The hours were very long most weeks, 50-55 hours.

Advice

If you really like kids and technology, go for it, because I still had a good time this summer, but be prepared for long days and annoying parents.

Instructor

June - August 2018 • Moraga, CA

What I liked

I liked working with kids and teaching them technology. It was a really great fit for me.

What I wish was different

I'm glad iD Tech admits students with language or other special needs, but they do not offer any extra support to instructors with special needs students, who may be totally untrained and unfamiliar with those needs.

Advice

This is a great summer job while you are in college, but the seasonal employment makes it hard to build a career with iD Tech, so do this as a summer job early in college.

Instructor

July - August 2018 • La Jolla, CA

What I liked

Teaching some amazing kids and doing it with some awesome and quirky coworkers. Everyone is very chill and even though the hours can get long, the people you work with and the kids who appreciate you make it worth.

What I wish was different

Hard to deal with kids and teens that disobey the rules. Still a summer camp that strives to have fun, not solely a tech class. Very hard to discipline kids returning for another summer, who have been waiting to go all year long.

Advice

Don't be afraid to take on this challenge because of the teaching aspect or the kids: it was an amazing summer experience with extraordinary people. Working with this team is amazing.

Instructor

June - August 2018 • Madison, NJ

What I liked

I enjoyed working and interacting with my coworkers while teaching the kids how to become youtubers.

What I wish was different

I would have liked if the kids generally had more knowledge of how to operate computers and basic operations.

Advice

Expect the kids to know nothing related to what you are teaching and when creating lesson plans dumb the concepts down to the most basic steps.

Instructor

June - August 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The atmosphere was very friendly and the team began to feel like a family.

What I wish was different

The hours are a bit imposing, expect to work overtime, but I don't see how they can really solve that.

Advice

If you're not good with kids, you will not be able to handle this job. It is a LOT of responsibility, and even if you're supposed to teach teens, be prepared to have to handle kids as young as 7.

Instructor

June - August 2017 • Bethlehem, PA

What I liked

I fully enjoyed being able to encourage and motivate students in their teens to learn more about programming. For some of them, it was their first time being exposed to programming languages, and while they were intimidated, they were eager to learn concepts. Their creativity and enthusiasm kept me going through the day!

What I wish was different

I wish that I was able to teach a different age group, to allow children to have the foundation of computer science at a younger age.

Advice

The experience is what you make of it. Be excited to share your experiences and make coding fun and enjoyable for those who haven't had initial experience prior to camp.

Lead Instructor

June - August 2018 • Berkeley, CA

What I liked

Working at a camp was a fun and engaging job and it was great to spend time in an upbeat environment. I loved getting to share my knowledge of code with my students. Additionally, the other instructors were awesome and I made some great friends!

What I wish was different

The job was quite tiring and the long days didn't leave a ton of time to do many personal projects.

Advice

If you're a first-year students looking for a fun experience sharing your coding knowledge, iD Tech is a super fun way to spend your summer! Just make sure you're prepared for the craziness that comes with teaching children!

Camp instructor

June - August 2018 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

It was pretty good pay for a camp, and I did day camp so it was basically a 9-5 job. The staff was also really cool.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a longer break, and that the leadership staff was more caring toward everything.

Advice

It’s very mentally and psychically draining but it’s usually rewarding at the end of the week. Also if you’re looking to get better at troubleshooting it’s a great job because that’s 80% of what you do.

Programming Instructor

July - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

There was a friendly community and instructors got to participate in fun activities along with students.

What I wish was different

The hours are a little dense and some of the course material is incompatible with the software installed on the computers.

Advice

Make sure you have some flexibility over what you're assigned to. Other than that just have fun teaching!
