Trail Crew

June - August 2019 • Avery, ID

What I liked

Working outdoors everyday in remote country was the best experience! I got to see so much new country and work with an amazing crew. I learned a lot about myself.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been an actual Forest Service employee, but this was definitely a good stepping stone.

Advice

Keep an open mindset. It is a lot of hard work in sometimes bad weather, or miles of hiking in a day, or long hitches, but just be open to new learning.

Silviculture Crew member

June - August 2020 • Boise, ID

What I liked

Physical work, outside, with great folks!

What I wish was different

Better crew management and leadership. Some of the crews were given the exact same project for the whole time which sucked and limited learning opportunities. Most of the crews were doing different jobs than what they signed up for.

Advice

Anybody can spend 10 weeks in a tent when it comes down to it, don’t let that scare you off. You will leave feeling more comfortable in the field than in the city.
