IDEX Corporation

Mechanical Engineering Intern

August 2019 - January 2020 • Rohnert Park, CA

What I liked

I thoroughly enjoyed all the side projects my boss was able to offer me. It was fantastic experience seeing and assisting with what my coworkers did as professional engineers.

What I wish was different

Little professional growth opportunities were available for interns like seminars and networking events. Unfortunately most of the people I interacted with at the company were members of my department.

Advice

Take on as many projects as possible, especially ones that do not match your academic training. It is important to see what is possible and what kind of work you find interesting.

Summer Engineering Help

May - July 2019 • Windsor, Ontario

What I liked

I liked that although I was not a full-time employee, and was only temporary, I was still welcomed to many of the meetings and events that the permanent employees attended. They were very welcoming and made me feel comfortable asking questions about the tasks I was completing and about the company in general. I also liked the independence of it, and how much trust my coworkers had in me although I was new.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have been a little bit more creative with finding different tasks to do. Some days were slower than others because it could get repetitive doing the same job all day long. There were many opportunities to do different things, I just stayed in my comfort zone instead of in fear that I would mess something up. Looking back on it, I should have just tried and maybe failed once than to not have done it at all.

Advice

I would tell others to be bold in your new work. Be careful not to be too eager right in the beginning, as it might come off the wrong way, but continuously look for new things to learn. Chances are your coworkers will have no problem helping you out.
