Economics Intern

What I liked

I thought the workspace was great. Lots of very high-tech conference rooms and such, with great A/C. The office was right in Dupont Circle, which is a very vibrant part of DC. The work that my department did was very interesting to me; mainly they forecasted prices and costs for some pretty large industrial clients. I got to do a lot of work with Excel, some of it was essentially messing around, which I really enjoyed.

What I wish was different

The social atmosphere at the office was pretty lackluster. There were only a few times over the course of 10 weeks where there seemed to be a friendly, welcoming environment within the office, and those times were usually when we would go out to a big lunch together. I also had a very unsatisfactory relationship with my manager, where he was very patronizing and paternalistic.

Advice

Even if you're not sure what area of consulting you want to get into, it's great just to try one and see what you do and don't like about it. I found that I enjoy economic consulting and crunching numbers for clients, as opposed to some of the more direct management consulting stuff that a few people in the office did.

Software Development Engineering Intern

What I liked

I loved my team we were very tight knit and if I ever had any question about the technology or specifications for the project someone is there to answer. I was also close to program managers and head of departments and was able to sit in on meetings and understand the business-side.

What I wish was different

Nothing it was overall fantastic.

Advice

Ask questions! Initially I was scared and nervous to ask other software developers and program managers questions about my project but with time I definitely learned to speak up.

What I wish was different

Depending on the team which an intern is assigned, the type of work assigned may be different. In some cases, it can be meaningful and exciting, and in others, quite uneventful. The company itself is fast paced and does interesting work.

Advice

MANY opportunities to network! After this summer, many people offered themselves as a resource in the future. Take advantage-- most people in IHS Markit are very well connected!

My boss was fired in the middle of my internship and I was exposed to a lot of corporate politics

What I liked

I loved the company culture and the accessibility I had to upper-level management. I was doing valuable tasks that helped me develop as a professional and added value to the company.

What I wish was different

I wish I had known my job title in advance or had at least a small say in what department I would be in. My role was great for me, but having a choice would allow me to feel like I had more control over my career.
