Recycling, Education, and Quality Assurance Intern
June - August 2019 • Indianapolis, IN
What I liked
I met a lot of people who are really trying to be influential in the field. I felt like a lot of the employees in IDEM were actually in the field because they cared about the work that they were doing and were not just there for a job. I also highly valued the guidance and respect they provided me. I never felt like I was treated as the intern, but just as another employee. I was entrusted to independently take on important projects and given the opportunity to go and work in the field alongside other employees. They were also incredibly supportive and willing to connect me with people in and out of the department for career advancement and networking opportunities.
What I wish was different
I simply wished I would have had more time interring with IDEM and more opportunities to connect with other interns in both my department, as well as all intents working at the Government Center.
Advice
For me, the idea of working with the government seemed daunting; however, everyone I worked with was incredibly friendly and resourceful. Get to know your fellow employees whether or not you are collaborating on a project with them. Not only does it make the work environment more enjoyable, but it also provides a networking opportunity.

Recycling Intern

What I liked
I loved getting to know how legislation effects recycling markets in the state.
What I wish was different
I wish it had been more environmentally and sustainably driven, rather than economically and politically driven.
