Summer Research Student

May - July 2018 • Bloomington, IN

What I liked

I loved learning what research is actually like in the "real" world outside of school. I also loved having the independence and time to try to figure out problems on my own. So many of the concepts I was working with were new to me, and so I had the opportunity to gain skills in finding answers for myself. In addition, the REU program and the other people that I worked with were great! They were all very supportive, and always willing to help me when I needed it.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had some time to prepare beforehand. I ended up spending a lot of time reading just to get the base knowledge that I needed in order to do my research, so I wasn't able to get as far as I would have liked. Next time, I will be sure to contact my advisor and ask for material to start learning beforehand.

Advice

It's okay if you feel very confused and overwhelmed with new information. From talking with other summer research students at IU, I realized that we were all confused at one time or another and were not totally confident with what we were doing. There is a lot to learn, and you are not expected to know everything all at once. That's what learning is for!
