Interstate Batteries - Texas

Corporate Accounting Intern

June - August 2018 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I was given a lot of responsibility. I was the lead contact for multiple projects in the external audit that was taking place while I was there, among other important tasks. They were also extremely accommodating for the absences I needed to take (short vacations and traveling for my cousin's wedding). Their Summer Internships had a program assigned to the interns where we had weekly lunch opportunities and other ways to get involved in the company and to grow as individuals.

What I wish was different

There were multiple days that I didn't have work. I would ask other people if there was anything they had for me to work on, and they just didn't have anything for me. This wasn't the end of the world, but the more days I had like this, the more frustrating it became. I wish I had been more willing to ask people to have lunch with me and get to know them a bit more so I could hear more of what they did and how they had ended up in the company.

Advice

Internships get you real life experience in applying the knowledge you've learned in class, and they help you to learn what you really want to do, or not do. Don't just focus on the tasks you're learning, though. Talk with other people and get to know how they got to where they are, and learn practical people skills from how they interact with others in the company.

What I liked

The company culture at Interstate is amazing and the people I worked with were some of the nicest I have ever met.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't change a thing, the whole experience was so awesome.

Advice

Be open to working outside of your title. I learned so much because I did things not included in my job description.
