What I liked

The culture and employees are the best part about working at Investopedia. Everyone is friendly and willing to help you with anything you need. Managers care about your success, but they also give you the freedom and trust to work independently. No idea is a bad idea here! The culture fosters creativity. We have a kitchen filled with snacks and drinks. Happy hours are hosted regularly, free iced coffee is served every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and breakfast/lunch is complimentary every Thursday. The environment makes me feel comfortable enough to step out of my comfort zone. It's allowed me to be my authentic self and contribute to meaningful projects. I even learned how to code! Investopedia has been a major milestone in my professional trajectory and I can't wait to see what's next!

What I wish was different

At the beginning of the internship there weren't enough desks for all interns so we had to rotate. Some days we had to work in the kitchen, other days we sat at the desks of employees who were out sick/on vacation. This was quite trivial, the desk moving only lasted for a brief period and before we knew it we had permanent desks! It would've been great to start work with a permanent though.

Advice

Stay curious, be eager to learn and fully embrace every assignment/ project! And don't be afraid to network while you're at it. My team of interns and I made a pact to ask one new person from our office to join us for coffee once a week . We met so many new people, picked their brains, gained valuable advice and made new connections. By the end of the summer I had added about 70 new connections to my LinkedIn! One of which just interviewed me for a 2019 spring internship at NBC! Ah, the power of a network!

Advice

If you're interested in journalism, it's okay to work with a publication that focuses on an area in which you are not an expert! I did not know much about finance, but the people who read my application and interviewed me cared more about my writing skills. Then, as an intern, I got to learn about journalism and finance!
