I loved my time at the Irvine Nature Center. There were so many new things I learned at this internship put my character to the test.

I wish I had a little more guidance during my internship.

Reforestation Intern

What I liked

While the lack of structure was sometimes challenging, I enjoyed the freedom of being able to design and execute my own project while calling pretty much all the shots. Working in the field was also really fun.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more structure... there wasn't much of a protocol for handling interns. A lot of the time, we ended up being assigned the same tasks as regular volunteers. It also would have been nice to get paid, even a meager wage.

Advice

Take the individual project seriously. There's some really smart people at Irvine who will serve as great mentors, but you need to be the brains behind the whole thing. They have their own work to do and will not spoon feed you.
