Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - August 2020 • Ithaca, NY

What I liked

I loved working with Dr. Beth Clark from the Department of Physics and Astronomy on the NASA OSIRIS-REx Mission. We continued work that we started over the Spring semester and over the summer, we wrote a paper that is currently in review. The best part about the experience was getting to collaborate with scientists on the mission team and becoming a welcome part of OSIRIS-REx.

What I wish was different

I wish we could have been in person because we had plans of going to visit our colleagues at the University of Winnipeg. This way, I could have done some hands-on work with the samples.

Advice

I think the best piece of advice I have is to remain open to new possibilities. Science is not linear – there will always be a curveball thrown at you and the most successful scientists are the ones who are able to take that in their stride and build something new out of whatever they have!

What I liked

I work in the Office of Analytics and Institutional Research at IC. The office is a pleasure to work in with a friendly atmosphere. We worked with data relevant to the college's operations in admissions, res-life, etc, and used both predictive and descriptive analytics to make forecasts, discover patterns, and generate data-driven suggestions for various college operations.

Endpoint System Technicion

February 2017 • Ithaca, NY

What I liked

I have learned a lot about the more complex structures that make large enterprise computer networks function properly!

What I wish was different

A little more continuity between systems. It felt like the documentation was not updated and efficiency and consistency were not as valuable as getting the units fixed and out the door.

Advice

take advantage of the certification programs that are available though the employment in the department.

Exploratory Intern

June - August 2018 • Ithaca, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed the fact I had indepent projects to work on throughout the summer. I was tasked with several projects that were not noramally given to interns and it exsited me to be trusted to heavely. I was able to be a part of a team spusifically during orienatiaon. I liked being able to help incoming students figure out their acadmic schedule and what their first semster of college would look like.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was a higher amount of contribution from other offices that I worked with. It all seemed that in the summer everything was a snails pass and unless it was an emgeragancy no one did anything outside what was nessacary.

Advice

Internships, like any job, is about working hard. I worked diligentely and wuickly and this was highly important to the those dirrectly above me. I was told at the end of my internship that my work ethic in the beggining is what made me stand out and why I was trusted with important projects.

Summer Scholar

June - August 2018 • Ithaca, NY

What I liked

I loved having the opportunity to work full time on my independent research project. Having the financial support and the time to do my research was amazing and made the completion of my project possible. Being able to work with a mentor and alongside peers also doing research was incredibly valuable. Getting my own office space was also a great resource. Being in Ithaca in the summer was also enjoyable.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been instead of required events at difficult times to foster community amongst the scholars that there were a devoted work space that was open to scholars to hang out and work. Having a space that we could use computers, printers, with chairs and maybe other amenities like a coffee maker or microwave would have been a great way to bring us together without us feeling forced or awkward.

Advice

If you have the opportunity to participate in the Summer Scholars Program, you absolutely should. Be on top of your obligations to the program and stay focused on your work, but also make time for yourself.
