Mechanical Engineering Intern

May 2022 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I was given assignments that had real application right away and I got to apply a lot of the skills I have learned throughout my college career, particularly in SolidWorks. It has been convenient to be using the same CAD program that we have been learning at Dayton as well. They have given me a variety of tasks to do and exposed me to both the design and manufacturing concentrations that I felt I was going in to see which I liked better. They also gave me a lot of freedom on how to approach designing something, and then would give me feedback on what they liked or maybe thought could be a little different and how I could change it.

What I wish was different

I sometimes wish I would have asked a couple more questions along the way just to get another perspective on something I was working on. However, I felt that when I had a question, I could go to just about any of the engineers in my division and they would give me very good advice. This is something I have learned as I've worked here longer and gotten to know more of the staff better. On one of my first assignments, I tried to struggle through something and figure it out and it took more time than necessary.

Advice

I would just say to make sure to ask questions to your fellow coworkers. That is a great way to learn and they were probably in your spot at one point too. Also, if the company you are working for wants to give you some freedom on what you want to do, make sure you tell them if you're interested in something. In my experience here at Jergens, they gave me a lot of flexibility on what to do and were happy to expose me to different areas if I asked about it.

Human Resources Intern

January - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

This internship was very hands-on and gave me a lot of great experience in the human resources department. Both of my supervisors were very open to any ideas that I had to improve different areas of the job, and they were extremely helpful and patient when I would have questions on any aspects of HR. The company as a whole is a great place to work and is really like a family. I would highly recommend any position at Jergens, but especially an internship for those looking to gain experience.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

April - August 2018 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I was able to live at home. Met two other interns that I became good friends with.

What I wish was different

Less interns under my supervisor. My boss was in charge of 9 interns and was too wide spread.

Advice

Very manufacturing heavy, make sure that is what you want to be doing.
