Chemist Intern

What I liked

The most valuable aspect of the internship at Kaneka was the exposure to "real" chemistry. There is a chasm of difference between school and work, but the internship helped close the gap by teaching me what it looks like to apply chemistry. I learned in-house processes and methods unique to Kaneka. I was also given all kinds of hands on experience with typical and special instrumentation. The internship ultimately served to show me that my place is to work in the private sector. Some took notice of my enjoyment, and I am happy to say that I am now working as a part-time employee in of the divisions at Kaneka North America.

What I wish was different

The internship has only been existed for a short four years or so, but those involved with the internship program have done excellent work to ensure the experience is smooth. I do not have any substantial complaints or wishes, except that the internship was quite short. Two months can go by rather quickly.

Advice

I learned there is so much benefit in pursuing internship opportunities because of the value they add to your portfolio, especially when you are going through school. The reason is, employers see your desire and motivation to gain knowledge and experience early on even though you are still in school. Depending on your life circumstances, If you are able to pursue internships or relevant work experience while in school, DO IT. I have worked full-time and studied full-time (simultaneously), all the while suffering from clinical depression and am happy to say that it is possible. You can do it.

Supply Chain Intern

What I liked

I loved the corporate culture of this company. Everyone was very passionate about their jobs and genuinely enjoyed their day-to-day job. Furthermore, in the interview they emphasized on how the company is a big family, and indeed it was, i felt just at home and like i belonged.

What I wish was different

I wish the intern program would have been designed in a way in which the interns could rotate job responsibilities. That way interns could "dip their toes" in different departments. This would aid the interns discover what field they would wish to work in.

Advice

Always take an opportunity even if it something you're not comfortable with right off the bat. I did not enjoy learning about supply chain in class but doing it in real life was way more enjoyable, and I do not regret going for this internship, I met great people and now I have an idea about what path I want to take post-graduation.
