Kent State University, WKSU-FM

Graphic Design Assistant

August 2020 - May 2021 • Kent, OH

What I liked

I was able to participate in meetings and project decisions. WKSU offered me a wide range of projects that pushed me as a designer and broadened my portfolio. The company offers a great work culture with support and kindness. They are very understanding that you are a student first and can be very flexible when needed. WKSU is my most positive work experience thus far.

What I wish was different

My only critique of WKSU is that company does not have a professional designer that the interns can refer to. However, there is great support and critiques from fellow interns and full-time employees.

Advice

Sometimes it is important to know how long things will take you as a designer to complete. You need to have to ability to not only see when a project will take you longer than expected but also to communicate with your co-workers that you may need more time on a project. This is never intentional as my co-worker were not designers and they did not have a gauge as to how complicated a project was or how long it would take. Clear communication is key.

Design Intern

September 2019 • Kent, OH

What I liked

The creative atmosphere is positive and very open-ended. The team I work with allows me to exhaust my creative freedoms on each project with structured guidance when needed. All coworkers are very welcoming and easy-going.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more hours (only 10-15 hrs a week)

Advice

No matter the creative path you take its always good to get in-office experience so you can get used to the dynamic environment. It's very different than freelance or other smaller office spaces but in order to get comfortable working with others, this is a good start!

News Producer

What I liked

I really enjoy my job at WKSU because it allowed me to step out of my comfort zone as a print journalist and broaden my abilities by learning more about radio and getting to produce my own stories for the air.

Advice

Be ambitious! If you have a story idea that you think is up their ally, say something! Don't wait for someone to come to you and ask what you want to do. The newsroom is constantly moving and looking for stories. It's your job to make your ideas heard!
