Key to Knowledge

Executive Intern

September 2020 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I was the Executive Intern here, one of several available positions, which means I was especially offered a great deal of flexibility and oversight (this applies to the other positions as well!). Interning here - even virtually, due to Covid - is so much more meaningful and hands-on than some internships you might find at a large company, and I had the opportunity to be directly involved in many day-to-day operations - including social media marketing, community outreach, hiring, and working with the other interns. I greatly enjoyed the learning opportunities that having the range of activities brought, although I didn't feel overwhelmed. You will be given many occasions to add your suggestions and contributions, and my fellow interns were all friendly, ambitious, and the environment offered chances to work independently or collaboratively, depending on your style. You will be given opportunities for advancement and to put your personal touch in the projects, including for fundraising activities and on social media, etc. This internship would be a great experience for students of all majors, but especially in the humanities or business, and definitely if you are looking for direct, hands-on participation and meaning.

What I wish was different

I can't think of anything I wish had been different.

Advice

Apply! I would also encourage befriending the other interns, because you can learn a lot from each other and collaborate on projects. Since everyone's contributions really matter, seek out additional opportunities where you can learn and advance Key to Knowledge's mission of providing education.

What I liked

I very much liked how the internship times can be self-adjusted and quickly agreed upon with the supervisor based on my schedule—giving me plenty of space to organize my time around my studies, along with the time to focus on my tasks, assigned by the supervisor. Another thing that I liked, was finding purpose in the organization and as an intern, which is in enhancing the quality of primary education in underdeveloped countries. Finding a meaningful internship, similar to what Key to Knowledge provides, was difficult.

Advice

A piece of advice is to be enthusiastic and positive towards whatever comes your way. The internship was great at improving my fundraising and networking skills. Also, the organizations' mission made me very enthusiastic and full of pride. Another advice would be to stay in touch with colleagues, as that was a great way to keep them and myself accountable for completing the tasks every week.
