KIDS FIRST Swim Schools

Swim Instructor

August 2016 • Cockeysville, MD

What I liked

Learned to adapt to the needs of the students and facilitate an effective and fun learning environment for children as young as a few months old to adult who are learning to swim for the first time. Super flexible schedule too.

What I wish was different

I end up performing several roles that are just as laborious as instructing without prior warning or reward. Despite regularly doing 3 jobs (and doing them well), I am still making minimum wage after 3 years of loyalty. The two owners are also a nightmare and constantly demand impossible tasks such as hitting ridiculous profit goals, and paying out of pocket for expensive supplies.

Advice

Don't work here if you can help it. The flexible schedule is nice, but not worth the ridiculous amount of work for very little reward.

What I liked

I really enjoyed the company environment and the team centered attitude.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have worked more hours over the summer but since I was also taking summer classes to finish up my associates degree at Northern Virginia Community College I only worked 30 hours per week.

Advice

Try something new. I had other offers from past summer jobs but I decided to pursue this job with a new employer and the experience was very rewarding and challenging.

Swim Instructor

May 2018 • Bowie, MD

What I liked

I have always loved working with children. So teaching about 200 children how to swim is something that I really enjoyed.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to get to know my coworkers.

Advice

You HAVE to love kids. If you don't, this experience is going to be very cumbersome for you.
