About Knoxville Police Department

The Knoxville Police Department (KPD) protects and serves the 7,600 (and growing) citizens within the 5-square miles of Knoxville, Iowa. We are made up of 15 full-time police officers and three support staff. While the majority of our force works within the patrol division, we have multiple specialty positions available within the department: Detective, Narcotics Detective, School Resource Officer, K-9 Officer, and Crisis Intervention Officer. Rank within the department consists of Patrol Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Chief of Police.

Patrol Officers work 12-hour shifts with every other weekend off. We are part of the Municipal Fire & Police Retirement System of Iowa (MFPRSI). We offer health, dental, vision, and life insurance, an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), vacation accrual beginning on day one, overtime opportunities, education incentive pay, longevity pay, a monthly cell phone stipend, free membership to our Recreation Center, and more.

Located 35 miles southeast of Des Moines, Knoxville is home to the Knoxville Raceway, Knoxville Hospital & Clinics (named a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital), new and renovated schools, nearby Lake Red Rock, and was recently named 1 of 11 Thriving Communities in 2024 by the Iowa Finance Authority & Iowa Economic Development Authority.

With our expanding housing and business development, it is an exciting time to live and work in Knoxville.
