Konrad Adenauer Stiftung

Project and Research Intern

July - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I liked the freedom I had to have my own research project and the ability to get feedback from peers and colleagues. I got to experience the organization's role in Washington, DC and how various stakeholders cooperate and communicate. Work hours were flexible, I was able to attend most career and government-related events around the city, and the work environment was very friendly.

What I wish was different

I would have like to have been more incorporated in different projects that the project managers were working on, and to have been challenged more. Sometimes, it seemed like the work environment was pretty inefficient due to the lack of business incentives at this political foundation.

Advice

Bilingual communication skills are a must as well as the ability to understand instructions from different people. Take initiative and they will allow you to make the most of your time.

Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I was able to experience first hand the work an NGO does and improve my German. I was able to experience what it is like to work in an international office where the primary language used is something other then english. I was also able to befriend/work with other interns around my age that came from different parts of the European Union.

What I wish was different

Although we were paid for working late night events, I wish we were normally treated as interns and not paid professionals.

Advice

If you are looking to see if international relations/ democracy promotion is a good fit for you then I recommend doing this internship.
