Labcorp

Pathology Technician

May - August 2021 • Madison, WI

What I liked

This was my first lab experience in an industry setting so I'm glad I finally have that completed under my belt. Everyone in the office was very helpful any time I had questions regarding my roles and responsibilities or just general questions about office life.

What I wish was different

I was doing the same task all summer besides the internship project that we had so being in the same lab doing the same thing for 12 weeks got old quick. I wish we could have gotten some experience in the different labs of the Pathology section. I feel like that would have given me a much more well balanced experience being there.

Advice

Go to work on the weekends for at least a few hours each day because pay is time and a half and if you go up there not knowing anybody it will get boring quick just sitting in you room in the beginning part of the summer.

Lab Assistant

July - August 2019 • New Brighton, MN

What I liked

I like... - the sense of security they implement on employees/contract employees. - my coworkers - different tasks my job had - and my supervisors, they were really helpful making sure I get informed of my new job.

What I wish was different

Working with urine samples, I wished they had air freshener, but cleaning the workspace often helps with the smell.

Advice

Phlebotomist Intern

April - May 2015 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

it was a good hands on experience and the my boss was very nice and let me do more than i thought she would.

What I wish was different

i wish it would of been longer than a week and that i actually got paid for it. Also wish i would of had the opportunity to get a job there, but it was a requirement for to get my phebotomy lisence.

Advice

Its surprising how many people actually give u when opportunity to prove yourself even when you are new and unexpericend. My advice is to just do the best you can and don't be afraid to ask to do something, from my experience they truly wanted me to learn.

Medical Diagnostic Laboratory Intern

May - August 2019 • Dublin, OH

What I liked

I really liked the people that I worked with and had many mentors that were excited to teach me the tasks and efficient ways to complete them. I liked the experience to see how a lab that processes 65,000 specimens a day is able to deliver accurate results on time day in and day out. I liked being part of a team that was willing to help me if I had any problems and the people that I met in general.

What I wish was different

I wish that instead of working night shift we could have worked day shift, but I understand that we wouldn't have had much experience dealing with specimens due to LabCorp receiving the majority of specimens at night.

Advice

I would tell others that it is worth the lack of sleep due to working night shift for the experience that you get at LabCorp. I would tell others to get to bed early and that they will be less tired for each week working night shift as your body starts to get used to your new sleep schedule.

Clinical Laboratory Technician Intern

May - August 2019 • Dublin, OH

What I liked

I liked the professional development series that we did, and enjoyed a lot of the people I worked with.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been given more room to grow and learn. I also wish I had been exposed to more of the scientific side of diagnostics.

Advice

If you are certain you'd like to go into medical technology, this would be a good internship for you. Due to the regulations of medical laboratory testing, you will be doing entry level work.

Clinical Lab Assistant

July 2017 - August 2018 • New Brighton, MN

What I liked

Coworkers, exciting experience to see Clinical Testing and Drug Screening in a large lab setting.

What I wish was different

Pay and benefits. Boring and such a high turn over rate that most people don't know what theyre doing and within six months I was the person everybody came to if they had questions but made less than everybody else in the lab, and my yearly raise did not adjust for market inflation.

Advice

Great way to get lab experience but I don't see it as a long term career as pay is below market and benefits are lacking.
