Construction Management Intern

July 2020 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

I really enjoyed being able to handle task in the field and relay that to the office team, sort of like a bridge between the two networks. It was great to work with the guys in the field and see the actual design come to life right in front of you.

What I wish was different

The timing had been different. I started this internship in the middle of the pandemic and so I wish that I had started or joined the team before that and been able to really work with some of the guys, instead of having a learning curve with COVID19, plus the on the job training. Nonetheless it was a great experience and I have learned a lot.

Advice

Pay attention in meetings and don't be afraid to take on a challenge.

What I liked

Great team. The superintendents always are willing to help you learn.

What I wish was different

More feedback from the PM’s. My PM was so disengaged it wasn’t even worth saying I reported to him.

Advice

Overall good company and good people.

Construction Management Intern

March 2019 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

I have really liked working for Layton Construction. They treat you just like a project engineer and provide excellent training to get you up to speed. I have learned more during my internship than I ever have in school. I was able to work for 40-60 hours each week, and continue my internship part time while attending BYUI. I loved working on a large scale construction project. I have been working on the new hospital in Idaho Falls. Lastly, I loved the people with Layton. They made the job worth it.

What I wish was different

I wish they had taught me more about the field side of construction. I spend more of my summer in the office working on paperwork, emailing sub contractors, sending RFI's and Submittals, and updating and maintaining the plans. I wish I had been given the opportunity to learn more about the superintendent side of construction management.

Advice

One thing that I would recommend is pursuing an internship in exactly what you want to do for your career. I knew from the start of my schooling that I wanted to working for a large general contractor on a large scale commercial project so that is exactly what I pursued for my first internship. Doing this has led to many other opportunities for my second internship. Interview as much as possible.
