Food Processor

What I liked

I liked the paycheck and the free food and the board.

What I wish was different

The wifi could have run more often. Leads could have been much less condescending. Much of the work seemed pretty pointless, but you cannot really get time off for anything, even if you are sick and ill.

Advice

Talk to leads, communicate openly, because they will put you somewhere you would rather be. If you talk to them early, they can help you out. Don't wait.

What I liked

I particularly enjoyed the diverse group of each department. The lunch food and snacks were always something to look forward to after every 4 hours of work. I had applied and roomed with friends from college which made the experience more enjoyable. The supervisors and the people from HR were very accommodating and understanding of how different and hard it was to adjust to the schedule. At the end of the season, you have a chance to go to Katmai National Park. Hiking and looking at bears with friends, old and new, was a great experience and I still keep in touch with them.

What I wish was different

It was unavoidable, but I became sick about a week or so after my starting day and it lasted until a few weeks after I had left. Otherwise, I had a great time working for LCF and meeting everyone and hope to work there again!

Advice

I was sick for a majority of my time there which probably made my experience less than ideal. I would admit that I overestimated my abilities to cope with the hard schedule and long hours of standing. Bring lots of Vitamin C and painkillers and maybe a back brace. The job is very repetitious and you will get bored at times, but it helps to stay positive, and keep conversations with the people next to you.

Salmon Processing Crew

What I liked

I liked that LFC treated me with respect and sought to meet my daily needs to the best of their ability.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was a way to work 14hr shifts instead of 16hr ones, for extra sleep.

Advice

After seeing about 2/3 of the workers who started the season with me quit, I would suggest that people not over-estimate their ability to work in such a harsh environment. LCF does a good job letting people know what sort of environment they will be working in. Take their words literally and seriously when considering a position.

What I liked

Overtime pay is fantastic, love the people and the work environment, food in the cafeteria is amazing, and free housing and meals!

What I wish was different

Sleep is hard to come by on 16 hour shifts, and I would like to have been living in the Marina, which is closer to the Roe Room (where I worked).

Advice

Be ready to work hard, get very little sleep, and endure extreme temperatures/ repetitive tasks

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

Get enough sleep, and mentally prepare! The physical toll will only last about a week before your body gets used to the amount of work you are doing. The tough part after that is not allowing your mind and attitude get the best of you.
