Loop Abroad

Assistant Researcher

July - August 2021 • Johannesburg, Gauteng

What I liked

Being able to connect with others with their passion for zoo animals and conservation. I also liked that we were able to experience remote camera traps and analyze behaviors.

What I wish was different

It was in person instead of online

Advice

Definitely keep up with the images of the remote camera traps, it can be a bit daunting with the amount you have to go through but once you establish a daily schedule it's a breeze.

What I liked

I loved learning about veterinary medicine and practicing skills.

What I wish was different

I wish I had made a bigger effort to talk to Thai people. Especially my host family, even though they didn’t speak very much English.

Advice

Come with an open mind! Parts of the trip is hard work! But you get rewarded with fun activities.

Volunteer

June - July 2018 • Mueang Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai

What I liked

Basically everything! It was an unreal experience being able to assist in actual veterinary surgeries on dogs and cats! It was also extremely incredible to be able to treat wounds on injured Elephants! The amazing culture, people, food, and architecture in Thailand blew me away. The City of Chaing Mai was so welcoming and beautiful that I never wanted to leave!

What I wish was different

I wish that the living accomidations at the Elephant Nature Park were a little better. I lived in constant fear that a red, and highly poisionous, centipede would bite me in my bed. I had this fear because the firt night I found on on my bed. It had made its way through the mosquito net somehow.

Advice

If you have the ability to take part in this program, do it! Even if you are not interested in becoming a veterinarian I would still recommend this experience. The people that I met on this trip and the things I was able to do were incredible. I think anyone looking for an amazing thing that sets them apart from everyone else should check out Loop Abroad and their many programs!
