Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority

Administrative Assistant Intern

June 2022 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

There are so many opportunities to get involved, LA Metro touches everything transportation related and so you can shift to teams and projects that you are interested in.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been more proactive my first few months interning; I felt shy and out of place as many of my coworkers were primarily middle aged.

Advice

Take advantage of the people willing to grow you as a leader.

What I liked

If you're from the Los Angeles area and interested in transit, this is the dream internship for you! I seriously enjoyed getting behind the scenes/insider knowledge about projects in areas that I know well. The people in the office are very kind and easy to talk to, and have a lot of knowledge about their respective fields.

What I wish was different

As it is my first office job, I was a little surprised to find myself confined to a cubicle. However, always seize the opportunity and ask to go out into the field and integrate your learning with real life experience.

Advice

As per usual, do not be afraid to ask for questions: this is a learning experience and you want to get the most out of it and for your personal/professional goals!

Administrative Assistant Intern

May - August 2019 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I liked gaining the work experience. My employer helped me to understand the reasons behind the tasks I was doing. I feel this internship helped me learn the importance of initiative as well.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to do more work in the field and less work in the office. I also would have preferred a list of tasks to work on instead of having to check back after each task. Sometimes my supervisor would not be available and I would be left without work to do.

Advice

It is important to be ready to work with whatever you are given. Also make sure that each task is done well even if it may seem mundane or unimportant.
