Visual Design Intern

May - August 2020 • Mooresville, NC

What I liked

I loved the experience and how Lowe's made its interns feel important. I was given a project to complete over my internship and had the opportunity to present to executives at Lowe's.

What I wish was different

I wish covid hadn't made it virtual but there isn't anything Lowe's could have done about that.

Advice

Apply! It was such a blast and Lowe's is an awesome company to work for. When you interview, be yourself and explain to the interviewer what your interests are so they can place you in the best possible position.

Front End Associate

March 2020 • Elmira, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed learning the ins and outs of retail. This was not a job that I ever would have thought that I would do but since I had extra time being home due to COVID-19, I thought I would make the best of my time.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have known how stressful using old computer systems were before I hopped right into the position. I love feeling the pressure but not knowing how to do something and then being thrown right in front of real customers was a bit stressful!

Advice

I would suggest that everyone try to work in the fast pace environment of retail or food services at least once in their lives because it really gives you a whole new perspective of the buying and selling process. You also learn a lot about people!

Merchandising Specalist

May - August 2019 • Mooresville, NC

What I liked

Lowe's invests a lot of time, money, and resources into their internship program. I liked the interaction and collaboration you get with other interns in totally differing fields like engineering. It was also a great experience to work in a Fortune 50 company and see the fast paced day to day role of a merchant. There was also free housing which is definitely a huge bonus!

What I wish was different

I wish that they would have given me a mentor who was closer in age and was doing the job description for the position that I would have upon receiving an offer. My mentor was a senior merchant so he did not have a lot of time to dedicate to me.

Advice

Be open to trying new things that aren't in your job description. It will improve your experience and allow you to expand your network.

Customer Service Associate

May - August 2019 • Layton, UT

What I liked

I liked that they were willing to work me for basically full-time hours because I needed the money to pay for school.

What I wish was different

I wish we would have had more managers and head cashiers on-staff because too many problems come up in retail for there not to be enough people managing the store and its operations

Advice

I would advise people to make sure they know what working in retail entails before agreeing to do it.

Services Analyst Intern

March - August 2018 • Mooresville, NC

What I liked

I was given real ownership over improving multiple large processes. I got to work with three teams, off- and on-site, and present my results to many people I had met, from entry-level to VP-level. My team was welcoming, my manager within Services was a great teacher, and the Lowe's campus is really modern and new. Also, hotel suites were provided for the duration of the program, which was a great perk, and parking was free. Very casual dress.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have gotten started quicker, or had formalized on-boarding materials. That's not realistic for interns, especially since HR was managing over 80 people across nearly that many teams and many locations, but my team didn't seem prepared for me at first.

Advice

Just reach out to functional areas you're interested in and don't be shy when trying to learn more. A recommendation in-house is very valuable. Lowe's has all the functional areas other big companies have, is Fortune 50, and although it's near Charlotte has a low price level, so don't write it off.

Customer Service Associate

February - June 2018 • Mebane, NC

What I liked

The logistical organisation of the the store was excellent, and it paid well for an entry-level job.

What I wish was different

The managerial staff were under-worked, overpaid, and showed it in their personal treatment of their employees, (even going as far as to make an excuse to fire a seasonal employee just before the end of the season for falsified reasons so as to not hire full-time automatically) the constant working conditions were deplorable, and too much was expected of any one person who had a good work ethic in comparison to many others who were available but were allowed to stand around a forklift pretending to do work and talking.

Advice

Only take this job for the relatively excellent pay if you need more income, regardless of how it is made, have plenty of energy, have no hobbies or other interests, have plenty of physical stamina, do not care how you are spoken-to, are able to keep your mouth shut despite absurd orders, can withstand harsh weather conditions for physical labour, and must have an entry-level job of some kind.

What I liked

It was a very friendly place to work. My managers were really helpful and active. Paid better than my other job.

What I wish was different

It would have been better if they had more cashiers.

Advice
