Cashier

May 2019 • Kalamazoo, MI

What I liked

The people; coworkers are supportive and caring; pays my bills and then some.

What I wish was different

Cashiering doesn't present a challenge to me at all. It is a very "dry" job. I like to be presented with something that makes me have to think about a solution and troubleshoot to get to it.

Advice

Make sure you're ok with standing around for hours on end without the ability to walk more that 15 feet from your register.

Unloading Associate

August 2017 - October 2018 • Tigard, OR

What I liked

Improving my communication skills, being more active and higher pay.

What I wish was different

I wish that the store where I worked would have been closer to campus since the commute between Portland and Tigard didn't work out very well.

Night Stocker

May - July 2018 • Albuquerque, NM

What I liked

My coworkers were very productive, which encouraged me to do the same. My crew manager was very friendly and did everything he could to boost morale and make sure everything was moving smoothly. Since the store was empty, I was also allowed to bring my speaker and play music to keep me happy while I worked.

What I wish was different

I was a seasonal worker and was planning to work until a week before going back to college, but the end date for seasonal workers was one month before I planned. Two different managers that contributed to my hiring failed to inform me of this, so I didn't get to work for several weeks before coming back to school.

Advice

Since I did the night shift, I would say to try to adjust your sleep schedule at least one week in advance from your start date.

Cashier

May - August 2018 • Plainfield Township, MI

What I liked

At work, employees were almost always busy. There would be some dead time between rushes, but not too much. The other employees, supervisors, and managers were positive and kind, so the atmosphere was healthy. Also, the company provides plenty of breaks to its employees, so you are able to get away from the fast pace for a little bit during the work day. The supervisors also try to tailor schedules to their employees' preference for short or long shifts.

What I wish was different

Sometimes the technology was a little challenging to work with, i.e. the self-checkout machines, the pinpads, and the older point of sale program on the computers used to complete the transaction. Sometimes these would go out.

Advice

Remember this is retail--there are always going to be upset customers even if you did everything right, and sometimes you are just not going to know all the answers, especially as a new employee. Always remember to ask for help from other coworkers, but know that in retail rush-hour situations, others may be busy as well. Do everything in your power to assist, but be patient with yourself and customers.

What I wish was different

I wish when employees went above and beyond that they were recognized more for it. I also think that tasks for the day should be allocated better.

May - August 2018 • Brighton, CO

What I liked

I loved the employees and their different personalities and how welcoming they are to everyone. Not only do they help the customers find what they need but build not only professional relationships but create friendships with the customers .

What I wish was different

The short staffed days where it would get crazy busy and we didn't have enough people to help out in each department.

Advice

Although the pace is fast customers are understanding and as long as you stay positive the day will go by fast.
