Advice

At some point you need to put yourself first, if your job is being over critical of what you are doing or your performance evaluation relies on the number of customers that come in, then do not let your job negatively impact your mental health.

Appliance Salesman

April - August 2021 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

The pay was good and the employees who were there were very good at introducing me to the job and being enjoyable people to be around.

What I wish was different

I wish the training could have been broader to reach into some of the weirder customer experiences I had. As they taught us the basics but not really how to string these basics together or how to utilize online help to assist a customer.

Advice

It is a retail job involving expensive appliances so be prepared to experience some unsatisfactory interactions and be ready to help the customer in a polite, fast, and accurate manner.

sales associate

May - August 2021 • Stillwater, MN

What I liked

The employer and employees were quite helpful and kind.

What I wish was different

not much, the store did not manage money well but that had no issue for my involvement.

Advice

Idk, remember things because you basically need to know where everything is in the store at all times even if you are exclusively working indoor lawn and garden.

Cashier

May - July 2021 • Lansing, MI

What I liked

I loved my coworkers and my boss. Everyone was super kind and enjoyable.

What I wish was different

They were not the best about sticking to my scheduling limits. I would often be scheduled for times I had marked as unavailable, which made my time difficult to manage.

Advice

A job here definitely teaches you about home improvement. I came in knowing nothing and left being able to name most pieces of hardware and different types of lumber.

Appliance salesperson

May 2019 - July 2020 • Essex Junction, VT

What I liked

I had a lot of different roles. In addition to selling appliances I was able to work with our receiving department in unloading trucks, stocking shelves, and setting up deliveries.

What I wish was different

My supervisor and my assistant manager (my supervisor's boss) were not on the same page, so my supervisor would get upset with me for doing things that his boss had asked me to do. This put me in a tough spot on more than one occasion.

Advice

Everyone wants a refrigerator in a pandemic. Unfortunately sometimes you just aren't able to help everyone.

June - August 2018 • Kerrville, TX

What I liked

The environment was very friendly, and all the workers were really nice and helpful.

What I wish was different

Working more hours or working there longer.

Advice

It was definitely a different experience than my other jobs, but as long as you're friendly and ask for help when needed, all goes well.

Paint Mixer

May - August 2020 • Carthage, MO

What I liked

I enjoyed the repetitive process of both making sure items were stocked properly and mixing paint for customers.

What I wish was different

The lack of knowledge outside of just the paint department was kind of the killer for me. I wish that I had learned more about the application of the products or the management required to keep a stable business running.

Advice

I would say that the most important part about being the paint guy at Lowe's would be that learning to have a real conversation with random people is really important. This was also probably something that will be used in many situations both personally and in a business setting.

Internet Team Member

April - August 2020 • Colorado Springs, CO

What I liked

It was really fun, the people were awesome, fairly easy, close to home, employer had a lot of faith in me, hands on things, learned about various items we sold and what they are used for, flexible schedule, easy communication.

What I wish was different

Little more structure and organization within the company as a whole.

Advice

It is really a swim or drown environment so be good at social learning, be a quick learner, and be ready to hit the ground running. Also, do not hesitate to ask questions, everyone is so nice.
