What I liked

Excellent team, interesting workload, location, steep learning curve (positive if the goal is to learn the nuts & bolts of growth equity investing)

What I wish was different

Advice

There is a lot to learn. The firm works in many different vertical markets and with a number of different business models – learning the ins & outs of these different businesses takes time and effort but is well worth the exertion. Great experience, learned a lot, and ultimately accepted a return offer.

The M33 internship experience is perfect for any student who wants to enter into a full time role in private equity or venture capital. Most venture capital firms treat their interns as just that, an intern. At M33, you are treated as a full-time analyst and are responsible for the same workload. For example, many VC internship programs give you the chance to sit in and listen to calls with CEOs that are conducted by the team's analysts and associates. At M33, you conduct these calls completely on your own; building relationships with CEOs is probably the most important part of the job. Reviewing hundreds of companies throughout the summer and speaking with dozens of founders gives you a great skill-set and allows you to quickly identify those targets that present higher priority targets for your team. M33 is a great team. Who you work with can make or break you internship experience. The analyst team actively reaches out to help throughout the summer, and senior members and partners are just as easy to speak to. The team genuinely cares about your career development, and will actively work to help you to achieve your goals, whether that be in venture capital or some other area. (personally, I wanted to find a similar VC role after finishing my summer internship and the M33 team actively helped me in my job search until I found a full-time role)

Advice

Understand that this role can be a grind. (some weeks you may be sourcing 50+ companies a week and conducting 10-15 calls a week in addition to cold calls and other research projects) If you want to perform well, push yourself to meet and exceed your goals each week. You will need to learn quickly so be able to hit the ground running. Conducting calls with CEOs can be a challenge, you will want to try and bombard them with questions. Try to keep things more conversational and steer things toward what their specific interests might be. The best way to make the most out of your experience is to work as hard as you can, it will pay off in interviews as you prepare for a full time role.

What I liked

M33 Growth was a fantastic place to learn about the growth equity world with co-workers who were both supportive and immensely knowledgeable. The firm is very focused on developing its internal talent and even interns get a variety of working experiences with members of the team on all levels. The culture is very tight-knit, welcoming, and collaborative and leads to a frictionless work environment for all members of the team. The firm takes a unique perspective to investing and interns are expected to contribute quickly and given tangible responsibilities immediately across a variety of tasks and roles that give strong access points across the entire shop. Overall, I had a great experience, learned a lot, and appreciated all the efforts of the team as we worked remotely through COVID.

Advice

Be prepared to learn quickly and on the fly as you grow into the role and handle larger sourcing workloads. Also, be proactive in your reach-out and define clearly what areas/roles are of interest to you before so that the team can be as helpful as possible in exposing you to these.

What I liked

M33 was an incredible place to spend a summer and learn from a group of remarkably talented individuals. The company is approaching growth-equity in a creative way (everyone else says this, but for them it's true) and it was exciting to learn perspectives from company leadership over the course of the internship about the industry as a whole. The firm is mentorship focused, making a tangible effort to go beyond basic training and truly invest in the development of all employees including interns on an ongoing basis. The culture is fun and exciting, and the team is very tight-knit but inviting to interns. I had an amazing summer and have been recommending the company to peers looking for other internship or full-time opportunities.

Advice

Have a goal as to what you want to learn/work on over your summer and be prepared to share these goals when you start. The team is incredibly receptive to mentoring about specific topics and if your interests align with a need, you will almost certainly get a chance to work on what you are passionate about. Ask questions and learn from the answers you get. The team has an impressive grasp on the growth-equity environment as well as the industries they are targeting and there is so much to learn.
