MacLean-Fogg

Sales and Marketing Intern

September 2017 • Bloomfield Hills, MI

What I liked

The internship is very hands on and mirrors the real work you would be doing on a day to day biases. I was flown to San Francisco to meet with other companies, as well as attend a sensor conference with my boss. My opinion is valued and i am given meaningful work not just busy work. The pay is very competitive when comparing it to other internship opportunities. I am not micromanaged, my work is left up to me to be completed in a timely fashion. Very flexible with my school schedule.

What I wish was different

More exposure to manufacturing sites.

Advice

If you are looking to get into the automotive sector in Michigan try starting off with a tier 1 or tier 2 supplier instead of the OEM's. This is a great way to gain knowledge on the whole automotive industry instead of one particular OEM's strategy.

Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Royal Oak, MI

What I liked

It was a really great start to seeing how a manufacturing company works, and how each of the branches work with each other for certain work tasks. I enjoyed being able to do a lot of different tasks, which involved being out in the plant to perform hand assembly of wheel fasteners and observe machines that were having problems, being in the lab to take part measurements and load testing, and being in the office where I was able to help with data collection and documentation for clients like Toyota.

What I wish was different

I wish the position has been a little more organized as far as having a set task to do everyday, because since I was always doing little things here and there, I tended to just fill in wherever was needed and therefore had a lot of time where I wasn't given anything to do.

Advice

Although boring at some times, it was a really great experience for me to have and gave me some great insight to a job in quality engineering or manufacturing engineering in the automotive realm. I would try to be more assertive in asking for things that need to be done, but I also think it is good to do what you are asked. I felt bad asking questions, but everyone is always happy to help, so really, never be afraid to ask questions when you are unsure. It's more important to get the job done right than to try and guess and end up doing the wrong thing.
