Madison Gas and Electric (MGE)

Electrical Engineering Intern

What I liked

Flexible work schedule. Great people. Great work environment

What I wish was different

Pay was the same over all 3 years of working there. During COVID-19 Pandemic work became very repetitive.

Advice

Make sure you take the time to network and always keep your eyes open for work/internship opportunities. The more options you have the better. The worst thing that can happen is you have a better options than what you've looked into.

Gas Engineering Co-op Student

June - December 2020 • Madison, WI

What I liked

The gas engineering group was incredibly supportive! Everyone was available to help if I ever had any questions. I was able to be involved in numerous different types of projects over my time there, which was a wonderful way to expand my experience.

What I wish was different

Due to the pandemic, I was not able to go out into the field as much as I would've liked. The MGE staff worked diligently to get me some field experience whenever possible, so it may be more feasible in the future.

Advice

This is a great company with an intricate support system. I highly recommend working here if you're interested in a variety of engineering disciplines, they offer it all! Additionally, working for a utility is an unique experience that will serve you well in any field going forward.

What I liked

The employees at MG&E were nothing but welcoming. I felt comfortable enough to ask as many questions as I could come up with. My team was always able to assist me or guide me whenever I needed the help- never felt like I was on an island. I have to give credit to the team as I learned valuable utility and engineering experience, despite being remote. I am grateful to have been apart of such a supportive group of people.

Intern

May 2019 - January 2020 • Madison, WI

What I liked

The work environment was extremely supportive, collaborative, and educational with a lot of hands on experience and the ability to learn through actually being involved in the process, versus just observing from outside.

What I wish was different

The internship had a lack of structure that was both enjoyable, and hindersome, as you were able to choose your own projects, but were not necessarily sure what projects to chase after.

Forecasting and Optimization Intern

September 2019 - March 2020 • Madison, WI

What I liked

I was given plenty of responsibilities, including a daily reporting task that the team relied upon and a long-term data analysis project that was attempting to progress how MGE evaluates and forecasts electricity consumption. My manager gave me plenty of freedom to explore areas I was interested in. I felt like my work actually mattered to the team, and it wasn't just boring intern work. I really enjoyed the people I worked with, everyone was nice and always willing to help when I had questions. I also enjoyed going to the MGE office and having my own space, it made me feel like I was actually a part of the office even though I was only there part-time. I was able to create my own work schedule based around my classes, and I was given the freedom to alter it on short notice if I had a midterm or project coming up.

What I wish was different

The work was very heads down and individual, but that's somewhat expected with data science. The set-up of the office wasn't very collaborative, but the team was still very easy to communicate with. Really minimal complaints, I really enjoyed the internship.

Advice

Make an effort to meet people around the office, as everyone was very welcoming. Don't be afraid to take on projects that seem overwhelming at first, the team was interested in seeing me grow and was willing to help when questions arose.

Gas Construction Engineering Co-op

January - August 2020 • Madison, WI

What I liked

I liked the small-company feel, which provided plenty of access to management and supervisors. The engineering group was very open and willing to assist me at all times. The location was very convenient to where I live in downtown Madison. The projects were challenging, yet manageable. The transition from a pre-COVID office setting to the post-COVID work-from-home setting was smooth.

What I wish was different

I was not able to get out in the field as much as I wanted (Due to coronavirus concerns, not the fault of MG&E). I wish I could have worked more with AutoCAD and Synergi to gain a better grasp of those programs.

Advice

Reach out early during the co-op, you can gain a lot of experience in different areas within the department (surveying, planning, budgeting, etc) by reaching out to the right people.

After my full-time work in the summer, I stayed on as a part-time intern to help out in my department and the hours were extremely flexible, which is always helpful while taking time-consuming classes. My boss challenged me with interesting projects and provided a truly invaluable experience that led me to pursue a career in the energy industry.
