New Media and Content Marketing Intern

May - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved the connection. Even working in a department where time is especially of the essence, people took the time to really understand where I'm at and where I'm going.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten to spend more time with different professionals in the department. For the most part, I reported under one boss & saw the rest of the team once a day for 10 minutes during our daily meeting. I wish I was able to better understand their daily jobs, maybe in a rotational manner, rather than just hearing about them. I enjoyed my position, but I was curious to the other talented people I was working with - what are they doing? Would I enjoy that more? I did reach out to a few people on my own, which I highly recommend. But I think every internship should have a week or so of shadowing or rotations.

Advice

My biggest piece of advice is to utilize your time with the company wisely. This may be a once in a lifetime chance for you to create relationships with people who are obviously very talented and can help steer you in the right direction. Look people up, research them, contact them, schedule coffee with them, send a thank you note. Boom, connection made. You won't regret picking someones brain. You will regret not doing so.

I was able to travel and meet new people from all over the country who love baseball and softball.

What I wish was different

Advice

Entering the work industry, especially professional work industry, people will hold you to an extremely high standard no matter how old you are and that’s when your personality and work ethic are put to the test the most. Do your best always and never be afraid to ask questions! It’s better to ask than mess up because you didn’t want to ask for help.

Advertising and Marketing Intern

May - August 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Working in baseball, first and foremost, is an incredible experience if you're a baseball fan! A good portion of my daily routine was reading the news in baseball and staying up to date on things like win streaks, the trade deadline, and Postseason predictions. The people were also a great group to work with - all incredibly fun and passionate about baseball on top of being smart and creative thinkers regarding baseball marketing and advertising. Additionally, they gave me and the other A&M intern a huge level of responsibility, especially in regards to campaign-specific marketing platforms, marketing events at the All-Star Game, and advertising implementation for the ASG and regular season games. Finally, getting to work with a huge intern class from across the country in New York City is a pretty wild experience.

What I wish was different

Since the Office of the Commissioner is currently undergoing massive organizational overhaul under the new Commissioner, our department was facing a lot of changes with who they were working with and what their responsibilities were. This meant that we as interns didn't get a lot of exposure to entire International Department at MLB; we only really worked with our supervisors directly.

Advice

Network! Getting an internship in baseball is one of the best routes to getting jobs in baseball going forward, whether or not you want to work in the department you interned in. So, explore what the other departments are and meet people from them (for the most part, everybody at MLB is always willing to talk to interns) - once you get your name in, you're in the baseball jobs network forever. However, MLB doesn't give "return offers" per se - so if you want to come back, you have to reapply and the onus is on you to utilize that network.

Information Security Intern

May - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I was given a lot of freedom to investigate their enterprise security and was given full access to their entire security stack.

What I wish was different

Early on I made the choice to be more involved in all of their products rather than focusing on just one. While I think it was the right choice I did leave without a singular strong skill I could market myself with, instead a hodgepodge of several skills.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask for access to a product even if you just say that you are curious about how it works. Never be afraid to ask if they have free training codes for vendor products. These technologies cost a lot of money so you might as well try to play with them.
