Biology Research Intern

June - August 2022 • Woods Hole, MA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the research atmosphere and how much they value undergraduate help. I also really enjoyed the location and the resources provided by the program.

What I wish was different

I wish my program didn't change and stayed consistent with my goals for the summer. My program didn't get me more experience doing bioinformatics, but the program director said that students' projects changing is unusual.

Advice

I really enjoyed the professional development workshops they did, the network, the undergraduate and graduate programs held during the summer, and the support they had for low-income folks.

Intern

June - August 2021 • Woods Hole, MA

What I liked

Extremely flexible schedule with hands-on field experience. Was given the opportunity to attend the summer lectures and network with other professionals working at the lab.

What I wish was different

A bit more guidance and interaction with the principal investigator running the lab.

Advice

Be proactive and set deadlines for yourself to ensure that your research will be completed on time. Reach out to other members of the lab for help!

Research Experience for Undergraduate

June - August 2019 • North Pole, AK

What I liked

The experience was a once in a lifetime amazing time.

What I wish was different

More time to myself and less time being with other people.

Advice

At field stations it is easy to get frustrated with people that you are around with a lot. It is good to try and be alone every once in a while.

Biology Research Intern

June 2018 • Woods Hole, MA

What I liked

The MBL is fantastic about getting undergrads involved in cutting edge research. As an undergrad I had assumed I would mostly be doing the simpler, bench work for my project, but they actually trained me on the transmission electron microscope and let me use it independently once I had shown I was responsible.

What I wish was different

I only wish this internship had been paid, but most of the MBL official summer internships are paid through REU programs. I put this internship together through personal connections and the experience was well worth the lack of payment in my opinion.

Advice

Take it all in! Everyone at the MBL, and every institution in Woods Hole, is excited about their research and wants to teach people about it, and they give great career advice as well.

Volunteer Intern

June - July 2018 • Woods Hole, MA

What I liked

I enjoyed gaining experience with a student in graduate school as she researched greenhouse gas release from fiddler crab burrows for her PhD. It gave me some perspective on how my own research could look, and how intricate and interesting research can be!

What I liked

I loved the opportunities I got to direct the research project in any way I wanted - it kept me motivated and helped me learn a lot of skills in a hands-on research environment.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship duration was a little longer - I had to leave just before the exciting part of our project began!
