Marketing Choices

Content Writer

February - August 2024 • Birmingham, AL

What I liked

The intern supervisor and entire team at Marketing Choices had a passion for helping interns succeed. If I ever had a question, they were eager to help and support me. I was able to learn a lot about the writing world from a team of caring professionals. My time with Marketing Choices inspired me to continue my pursuit of professional writing and marketing.

What I wish was different

Advice

I would share that it is important to ask questions. Asking questions is a pivotal part of learning, and I would encourage others to do so even if they are afraid to. The team at Marketing Choices welcomed questions, and this gave me the confidence to ask more whenever I had them. Learning is a lifelong practice, and your own eagerness to do so will help you in the long run.

Editorial Intern

March - June 2024 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed the consistent communication between the Marketing Choices team and their interns. They are always checking in to ensure you are understanding your role and are quick to offer personal calls to talk through any questions and concerns. It is the perfect opportunity for someone who is new to writing and editing.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had more of an opportunity to make connections with other employers and the team throughout the internship. Networking can be challenging here, since you are performing the same tasks to the same agencies every week.

Advice

I would encourage interns to keep producing high-quality work throughout the entire duration of the experience. This is a low-key internship, and it can be easy to become lackadaisical. This internship provides you a portfolio that you can send to employers later on, so encouraging yourself to keep working diligently is important. You get out what you put into this internship.

Marketing Intern

December 2022 - June 2023 • Tulsa, OK

What I liked

I really enjoyed the flexibility that the internship provided. Being able to work on my assignments at my own pace and having control over my schedule allowed me to balance work with other commitments effectively. Additionally, the open and transparent communication within the team made the experience even better.

What I wish was different

Honestly, I don't have any major complaints or suggestions for improvement. The internship program was well-structured and provided me with valuable opportunities to learn and contribute. The support from my mentors and the overall work environment were fantastic, and I'm grateful for the experience.

Advice

My advice to other interns would be to avoid overestimating their abilities and to make a conscious effort to balance completing assignments. It's important to set realistic expectations for oneself and to prioritize tasks effectively. By creating a plan and managing time wisely, interns can ensure they complete their assignments without feeling overwhelmed and still have time to explore other learning opportunities.

What I liked

My marketing choices shadow experience was excellent. I got to meet so many talented people and see what goes on at a marketing firm like this. I learned more about topics I already knew like photo editing and the use of a CMS as well as skills I have yet to learn like SEO and social media management. Overall a very fulfilling experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to get hands on with something, but I understand that they are remote and run a busy schedule so this would have been very difficult to plan and implement.

Advice

If you have a free day and would like to learn more about marketing and/or start learning about to company for internship opportunities, definitely check out Marketing Choices.

Content Writing Intern

May - August 2022 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

Positive introductory experience into content writing and blogging. You will get a feel for SEO, readability, voice adaptation, and content marketing. Articles require plenty of independent thought and place responsibility on the writer, which is excellent for practicing your craft.

What I wish was different

A more involved and rigorous feedback system would have been appreciated. I did not receive many requests to revise or general suggestions regarding my work. Expect to be your own editor and proofread your content carefully.

Advice

Spend time brainstorming. Do not fall into the trap of using the same topics throughout different articles; stretch your mind and come up with new scenarios to explore. Place your mind in the shoes of the audience and wonder what they are thinking when they click on your article.

Video Editor

January - June 2021 • Tampa, FL

What I liked

I loved the collaborative environment between the Project Manager and Director. We had weekly meetings regarding progress and expectations, which I found very beneficial and helpful, especially in the beginning when our project was still a concept. The company had a healthy focus on psychological safety, creating a safe environment for collaboration and critique; I believe that productivity and creativity flourished because of it. Every piece of the project was a shared experience, meaning our heart and soul went into it, which was encouraging knowing I was helping create something worthwhile and meaningful.

What I wish was different

At the time, my main issue was the reliance on talent to get back to us. A lot of our time was spent waiting for replies from outside sources who had put this project on the back-burner, which was understandably frustrating. As a full-time employee with the company, I now wish all the final reviews had been submitted simultaneously from clients, or ideally around the same time. It would have saved some time and relieved some frustration regarding the remaking of video project files if a concern would've been reviewed at the deadline, rather than after everything was approved.

Advice

Be open-minded. Everybody's heart was put into this and all the staff are passionate people; sometimes you might have an idea that doesn't work and you have to be able to roll with the punches (as you would in any collaborative setting).

Editorial Intern

July - September 2021 • Schenectady, NY

What I liked

My internship with Marketing Choices was the best first internship I could ask for. The schedule was flexible allowing me to work at my own pace. I love the team who are extremely helpful and encouraging. You can tell that they are genuinely rooting for you. I learned many valuable skills and became a published author! I was able to land other internships because of this experience including another internship with Marketing Choices. It was a pleasure to work with them again.

What I wish was different

I wish the topics that I had to write about could have been more diverse. Oftentimes it was hard to write about the same topics in new ways. But this was also a great skill to learn. I would've also liked to have more team meetings as they were fun yet insightful.

Advice

Make sure to stick to a schedule for your blog writing. Don't wait until the last minute because it slows the process for everyone. But of course if something has come up be sure to let the team know. If you get stuck on a topic be sure to... 1) have a brainstorming session 2) ask for help because the team is very helpful and there for you 3) look into the work your peers have done previously 4) take a break and come back to it

Digital Marketing Intern

May - August 2022 • Evergreen, CO

What I liked

I enjoyed the inclusive team environment. Plus, it was a great learning experience - you will gain knowledge by researching, writing, and editing blogs, and your work is published! I liked that there were monthly meetings where you were given valuable learning insights, such as how to utilize search engine optimization and audience targeting. The team at Marketing Choices really cares about their interns' experience, and they provide a positive mentoring environment.

What I wish was different

I actually wish that there were two team meetings per month. It was great to interact with the other interns and even though we were remote and met via video, it was really engaging.

Advice

My advice is to take the time to research what you are writing about, as you will be informing the decision-making process of your audience. Most importantly, keep your target audience in mind when writing your blogs so you can connect with them.

What I liked

I really liked how kind the entire team at Marketing Choices is as a whole. They have great compatibility and a good flow of team work, especially considering the distance between all of the individual employees. Each member is very determined to their role, and makes it obvious that they enjoy what they do.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had the same experience as I did remotely, but in person. It would have been great to meet the wonderful women at Marketing choices face to face and properly introduce myself

Advice

The company did a good job at keeping the Shadow Day interesting throughout the entire event. I felt involved, even as just an observer, and appreciated how accepting they were with me

Marketing Intern

September - November 2021 • West Palm Beach, FL

What I liked

I loved the flexibility this internship provided. I was able to creat my own schedule for completing my assignments. I loved the team meetings and the emphasis Marketing Choices put on supporting one another.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to do this internship in person. That would have been my personal preference, but having remote interns did open the door to expand the team! Without the remote option, I would not have been able to take part in this internship.

Advice

I would definitely create a schedule for your work and assignments and…. stick to it. Prepare your research for your assignments and utilize organizational skills throughout the process! It’s easy for thing to add up, but if you prepare and space out your workload, it’s way more manageable and the quality of your work increases.
