The construct of not-for-profit organizations was devised to provide advocacy, support, and resources for the disenfranchised. Nonprofits exist to solve a problem and make the world a better place. While altruism resides in the hearts of many, it can be difficult to bring awareness to a cause and have an impact if marketing resources are cost-prohibitive. Nonprofit organizations often have extraordinarily little in the budget for basic operations. This lack of funding requires the sacrifice of expenses that are considered non-essential. Unfortunately, marketing is often the first casualty during this cost trimming process. For the organizations determined to keep some monies for marketing, the allocated funds are unsurprisingly, a fraction of what is ideal.
As an example, a nonprofit with an annual budget of $100,000 will typically only allocate $2,000 or two percent, towards marketing efforts. However, marketing agencies can bill upwards of $7,200 per project. Taking into consideration annual fundraisers, #GivingTuesday, and targeted giving campaigns, marketing costs can be considerably more than the budget allows.
Due to the inability to market effectively, many nonprofits fail to make an impact, and some are forced to abandon efforts to bring awareness to the cause.
