I enjoyed the freedom and flexibility that my project and professor offered. There was a lot of creative freedom in coming up with new protocols and procedures in collaboration with my professors on the project.
What I wish was different
I wished that there was more communication with my professor. There was a lot of freedom which was nice to have and I understand that they are busy people but there was little communication on the next steps of my project at times.
Advice
Do research on the project you will be apart of and the professor you will be working with and ask as many questions about the project as you can.

PURE Intern
June - August 2021 • Milwaukee, WI
What I liked
I loved the small knit community we created through discussing sample cases in Genetic Counseling. The faculty and staff we worked with were amazing and made the experiences fun, informative, and comfortable.
What I wish was different
Due to COVID, the internship was online, I would have preferred an in person opportunity with a stipend - but these factors were out of my control.
Advice
Go for it! The PURE internship taught me a lot and helped me to better understand clinical genetics topics.

Undergraduate Research Assistant
July - September 2019 • Milwaukee, WI
What I liked
It was great working alongside a professor who could walk me through all of the technical knowledge that I was unfamiliar with. It was my first experience working with cadavers so this was a great experience applying what I am studying to what I am interested in.
What I wish was different
I wish I could have stayed on with the team throughout the school year.
Advice
Don't be afraid to reach to out to people. You never know what will come of it and the experiences can be amazing.

SPARCC
June - August 2019 • Milwaukee, WI
What I liked
I was able to interact with multiple moving parts in health care (Nurses, Pharmacists, Doctors, Clinical Research Coordinators, PhDs, etc) from a clinical approach, scientific approach and a humanities approach.
What I wish was different
I was a participant during the first year of SPARCC, so there were some kinks that needed to be worked out. However, there was nothing major that I would change.
Advice
Come into the internship with an open mind, and you will be able to explore many different avenues!

Lab Technician
May - August 2019 • Milwaukee, WI
What I liked
I liked that I worked independently to solve problems and got to learn new computer programs to assist me in my role.
What I wish was different
I wish it wasn’t so open ended. For example, I was just told this is the problem with a recommendation for solving it and I had very little assistance from my supervisor.
Advice
You can find a lot of program tutorials online to help you if needed.

Undergraduate Summer Researcher
May - August 2018 • Milwaukee, WI
What I liked
I liked the autonomy my mentor gave me and other interns over the summer. I also liked the philosophy and structure of the internship program that the Medical College of Wisconsin set up. We were adequately trained for our various lab assignments, and our summer culminated with writing an abstract and giving a presentation. Even though I worked long hours and was doing academic work over a summer vacation, it was one of the best summers of my life. I am so appreciative of the program and especially my mentor for their commitment to training undergraduate students in research.
What I wish was different
I have to say that I wish it had actually been longer! I voluntarily kept working in the lab after the internship program ended, until I returned to school for the fall semester.
Advice
Take the application seriously, making sure your essays and resume provide an accurate and attractive representation of yourself for the specific position.
A little bit of nervousness for the first days and the final presentation is healthy because it shows you care, and you are more likely to make a purposeful and good first impression.
Do not be afraid to admit you don't know the answers to everything; it is a learning experience, they are eager to teach you, and people are not impressed when you lie about knowing something you don't.

Summer Research Intern

What I liked
It was a great way to get some more research experience at a world renowned institution. I got to connect with faculty and postdoctoral students who are doing work similar to what I would like to do.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have had more lab time to work on my research because it was so interesting.
Advice
Through this experience I got to meet many different MD's and PhD's which can be very intimidating. One piece of advice I would give would be to not be afraid to put yourself out there and meet people in other departments and network with them.
