Undergraduate Research Assistant

May 2019 • Miami, FL

What I liked

The aspect I loved most about my summer research experience was how much I have been able to benefit from it. I was able to meet mentors and colleagues which were willing to teach and challenge me. While being constantly taken out of my comfort zone took some getting used to, it allowed me to develop a stronger work ethic, and able to think on my feet. Academically, I was able to gain letters of recommendation, a mentor who can vouch for me in any applications that I wish to do in the future. This research project will be an amazing plus to add on to my resume. Occupationally, because my time in the lab shows that I have the experience and expertise to pursue a career related to laboratory work, if I do wish. Furthermore, being able to work closely with professionals in these fields has given me amazing insight into my career path, and what exactly I am suited for.

What I wish was different

One of my main issues with the Wolfson Campus Laboratory is not run very efficiently. A lot of individuals walk in and out, and the exact schedule of all the researchers working is not very clear. This has led to problems, as an example, machinery falling/breaking and it not being clear who is responsible. Another recurring problem was the lab being too crowded, or someone needing to watch the machinery and no one being available. In order to fix this, I would recommend implementing a continuous schedule log, where everyone who walks in and out of the lab has to carefully record at what times he/she will be in the lab, time of entrance, time of exit etc.

Advice

I would recommend service-learning/job/volunteering opportunities to other students. The academic and professional aspect of it is an amazing opportunity for any STEM (and other) student who wishes to be competitive when it is time to transfer. The experience gained (the fact that it is a faculty professor on campus is an added bonus) is unlike others you can get elsewhere. As a matter of fact, as a co-leader, we will be looking to other students to continue this project once my partner and I have graduated.

Public Safety Dispatcher

June 2018 • Miami, FL

What I liked

If there's anything I like about public safety it is the job itself. This job allows me to meet new people everyday whether it's a call via telephone or face to face. When I am working I'm allowed to be myself and express my work ethics through my actions of being dispatcher. I enjoy working with my co workers and supervisor. The leading dispatcher Edwin Lopez always encourage me to be kind and work to my fullest potential.

What I wish was different

The one thing I wish to be different is my hourly wage, because I put the maximum effort into my job everyday and I try to work to the best of my ability with others don't see it.

Advice

I will be working under moments of extreme stress that may turn into hours or even an entire shift? I am responsible for every call I take, dispatch or transfer? Every mode of communication in public safety is recorded and may be pulled by my supervisor and members of the Human resource department? I will be scrutinized for any mistakes I may make. I am expected to be professional and polite to every member of public safety and to the students at MDC that I come into contact with no matter how they treat me? I may even face working short staffed due to a simple call out and/ or emergencies? I will be expected to be able to multi-task under the most demanding situations ever and be expected to do all of this with absolute accuracy? I will be exposed to certain things like crisis situations and critical incident stress? If you can take on all the things that I just mentioned and many more, then you my friend are in for the most demanding and challenging job you will ever love. If you can overcome and adapt, if you can perform on a team and be a forward thinker, if you can prepare for the worst day in and day out, then you just might find yourself in the most rewarding career there is (in my humblest opinion ) public safety.

What I wish was different

Consistent hard work really dos pay off, my experiences at the nursery have let me see the "fruits of my labor" first-hand. A hardworking coworker is the most valuable commodity for any business.

Student Researcher

May - September 2019 • Miami, FL

What I liked

As this was my first experience researching, I was excited to aid in the findings for an experiment. I was exposed to the laboratory setting, where I was able to fulfill my wish of interacting with live cells. I viewed the effects of manipulating the Bk channel on all the other channels of the airway epithelial cell.

What I wish was different

The only thing I would have wished differently is that I would have liked to have known the basic information of cells before working in the lab. It was a struggle to manage to learn the basics while learning the details on the experiment.

Advice

Manage your time correctly, soon enough the summer would be over and you would have a lot of work left to finish.

Biology Research Intern

May - August 2019 • Miami, FL

What I liked

I liked to work on the biology laboratory, make new friends, and have different task assignations.

What I wish was different

To have different options of types of research to select from.

Advice

I say that it was a good experience. For a person that has never been involved in research, it is great since it prepares you, helps you build your network, makes you more independent and secure of making choices, and it also helps you decide whether the research field is the right path for you or not.
