Michigan House of Representatives

Intern

June - August 2023 • Lansing, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed working with my fellow interns.

What I wish was different

I was working in the Member Services Office, not in a legislative office. However, I wish the internship had been more focused on constituent services rather than legislative canvassing.

Advice

Network with as many people as you can! Add everyone you meet and work with on LinkedIn.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Legislative Intern

May - July 2019 • Lansing, MI

What I liked

This internship really helped me understand the Legislative process and its workings better than any lecture hall ever could. I would highly recommend taking an internship here because you will learn how to interact formally with your colleagues and see all of the things you hear on the news as they occur.

Advice

This may seem trivial, but it is something I was very cautious about when I began the internship; try and build up your professional wardrobe before you start. If you are a college student, I would recommend going to thrift stores and purchasing items that are higher quality for a fraction of the price, as opposed to buying cheap and new. Buying good quality articles of clothing goes a long way in establishing your professionalism and commitment to the working environment.

Legislative Intern

May - August 2019 • Lansing, MI

What I liked

It was an incredible learning experience for me as a political science major. I got to be right in the center of Michigan’s legislative hub and take part in the action. It was definitely what I would call a pivotal moment in my career because now I am certain in my career track.

What I wish was different

I wish that I lived closer to Lansing. The commute from Belleville is a nightmare.

Advice

If you get the opportunity to work in Lansing (especially as a Political Science or Public Policy major) I would highly recommend it. Be prepared for a fast paced, and multitask-heavy environment.
