Sports Journalism Intern

May - July 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the immense flexibility that the 12.up internship program offered to interns, especially since it was not a paid opportunity, to fit the experience suitably between classes, other work, or any other commitments. The shift requirements and limits were perfect for gaining the right amount of experience and skills each week without going overboard and losing productivity late in the week. The application process was a little detailed, but very manageable and the coordinators kept good communication with applicants throughout.

What I wish was different

If I were to pick out one thing that I found to be negative about this internship experience is the ability, upon program leaders' communal decision, for interns to terminated of their internship as early as a one month period into a three month period. While the group does inform the interns that this is a possibility, I do not believe that that is a decision to make around an internship of this level. Internships are supposed to be about learning throughout the entire program, the idea isn't to see complete mastery of tasks much before the interns even finish. It is supposed to be an educational experience, and it seems like the editors were quite impatient on that front. I was let go around the end of July after starting in the middle of May, and this was not something I expected upon taking it up that I would a roadblock with the program. It was quite disappointing and a poor look on the company.

Advice

If you are someone looking to advance your writing skills for any reason, sports or not, I think this is a good internship for those at various levels and is worth applying for. However, my advice would be go in with what I've said in this review in mind, because it could impact you down the line as it had me.

What I liked

I got a lot of experience with SEO and writing very quickly.

What I wish was different

I wish it wasn’t remote and I had more communication with other interns.

Advice

If you aren’t going to get paid for your work, at least apply for some crazy cool gigs. I got the opportunity to interview an Overwatch League player.
